Harley and the Iris

I was resting quietly in bed on Tuesday afternoon when suddenly a roar came thundering down Indian Trail Road. It was none other than David Onion and his neighbor on their big ole Harleys. They had travelled from Western Springs to Macomb to surprise his brother Steve on his 50th birthday. The above photo shows a Hells Angel (Dave) and a guy who can't even ride a bicycle. Unfortunately, that's sort of true as I learned to ride a two-wheeler when I was 9 years old. Dave and I go back a long way and we had a brief but memorable visit.

We met with Dr. McGinnis today and he asked how I was doing. I said fine and he replied, "that's good because now it is going to get tough." I inquired precisely what that meant and he informed me that my throat would become a searing hot piece of flesh and there's little that can be done to mitigate that pain. This will be the hard part, but both me and Dr. Diane are ready. Today marks the end of week two so we are at 28% completion point. My weight is down to 173, but I'm still ingesting 8 cans of Fibersource a day. Somebody sent me a card with a quote from Winston Churchill "If you are going through hell, keep going." And so we shall....

As I am very restless at night, Diane and I sleep in separate rooms until about 3 or 4 a.m. when I join her for a change of venue and a loving caress. I think it is good for both of us.

Ahhhh, Iris. One of the joys of spring is that when my tulips fade, the Iris make their annual appearance. The purple ones are my favorite as they emit a beautiful fragrance. I look a little weird when I bend over and take in the scent but then I'll probably do a lot of weird things in the next few months.

House progress continues. The kitchen is almost done. One advantage of my "situation" is that Diane has had to organize and put things back all on her own. My role is to be her chief cheerleader. She does all the work. In addition, this weekend we are having a neighborhood garage sale and rest assured nothing, I mean nothing, that has come up from our basement will go back down. This will be the first garage sale of our lives. It should be a doozie.

Though weak, I remain in good spirits as that is the only real viable option I have. It is funny Gordy Taylor--little exercise, no sun, no Diet Coke, no steak, no wine, no food. It is amazing what the body will tolerate and the spirit endure.
